Government must deliver on Dáil motion on Student Nurses – Matt Carthy TD
Cavan Monaghan Sinn Féin TD, Matt Carthy, has called on the government to ‘deliver on a Dáil motion’ that called for fair allowances for student nurses and midwives.
Deputy Carthy said:
“Nine months ago the Dáil passed a Sinn Féin motion calling on government to provide a permanent settlement and fair allowance for our student nurses, midwives, radiographers, and others.
“Absolutely no one can suggest that the invaluable work carried out by these student healthcare professionals throughout the pandemic was anything but work.
“We relied on them whole-heartedly in the midst of unprecedented circumstances and they will continue to be the backbone of our health service for decades to come.
“Sinn Féin had called on the government to have this place prior to the beginning of this term, and we will continue to demand that government implement the will of the Dáil in advance of this years budget.
“The Minister for Health must stop the delays, he must implement the basis and spirit of the Dáil motion to support our student nurses; he cannot say there has not been adequate time.
“The work of student nurses must be recognised – this means fair pay for their labour.”
